About Us

Founded in 1998, The Dyslexia & Literacy Service (DLS) is an organisation of educational psychologists who, although experienced in assessing all age ranges, specialise in the assessment of adults for the range of Specific Learning Difficulties to include Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia and Dysgraphia. In over ten years we have undertaken almost 10,000 diagnostic assessments for the Disabled Student’s Allowance (DSA) and our extremely experienced psychologists have an up-to-date knowledge of all the issues involved including the DfES guidelines for assessment in Higher Education (2005, rev. 2009).

DLS has built a reputation for having a caring approach, looking at the complete picture and for making assessment a positive experience.

Based in Exeter, we have clients and psychologists across England & Wales.

Latest News

May 2012 Grateful thanks to both our long-term and new clients for making this our busiest year ever. This summer will be very exciting as we will be launching a wide range of new services, all based on the knowledge and experience of our extremely highly-trained and helpful educational psychologists. These will be for the benefit of students, parents, practitioners, institutions and the workplace - employers, employees and those seeking work.

More details to follow in our SUMMER NEWSLETTER (available June), but here are just a few:

Our ON-LINE SCREENING will be launched in September and, instead of our usual summer garden party for colleagues, we will be demonstrating this at a series of afternoon tea events around the country- more details to follow - please CONTACT US for an invitation.

PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS. We have had many requests for help and information from the parents of prospective students and so we have devised a comprehensive programme of events which will help to prepare all students, not just those with Dyslexic-type difficulties (SpLDs), to make the transition from A level to degree level study. These will take place in August and September- please see our STUDENTS 14-18-ADULT page for more details.

EVENTS FOR PRACTITONERS, ON-LINE TRAINING & RESOURCES and much more.

Thank you, again, to everyone who has shown an interest in DLS.

Helen Andrews, Managing Director

Emotional Well-Being

DLS feels that it is vital to look at the whole range of difficulties affecting people being assessed in order to make any future support as useful as possible.

We have a team of highly skilled professionals who do more than just assess; they use their skills as psychologists to look at the behaviour and issues of those they spend time with. For many people this will be their first opportunity to talk through background history, worries and fears and we believe this consultation to be a vital part of any assessment.

Dr Kate Esser,
Dyslexia Coordinator,
Southampton Solent University

"Institutions value service providers who are flexible, caring and professional. We are lucky at Access Solent in having just this kind of partnership with The Dyslexia and Literacy Service who have undertaken diagnostic assessment for our students since 2003.

It's really helpful to be able to resolve questions or queries with a quick text, call or email.

Reports are user friendly to help staff and students get to the heart of understanding their diagnoses and getting appropriate support. The EPs are also professional and relate really well to our students and their needs.

DLS has worked with us to develop and review systems that deliver excellent customer service- a great example of a working partnership that reflects changing needs across the sector- and they are also great value for money!"
